Collage of pregnancy-safe makeup for pregnant women

Pregnant women know the list: No unpasteurized cheese or alcohol. Many moms-to-be switch to decaf or at least cut down on caffeine. We are told to be careful with fish and deli meats and wash our fruits and veggies well. But what about the chemicals in our beauty products? Are these products that we’ve always used pregnancy-safe makeup? Is it safe to keep using the same mascara, foundation, and bronzer now that a little one is a-brewing in our tummy?

Many women say it’s not worth the risk and to commit to using clean, nontoxic, pregnancy-safe makeup and beauty products. So, we’ve compiled a list of 23 pregnancy-safe makeup and beauty products that we think you’ll love as much as us.

What To Look for in Pregnancy-Safe Makeup and Beauty Products

Pregnancy can take its toll on a woman’s body. Expecting moms should invest in makeup and beauty products that accentuate their natural beauty and make them feel good. And that doesn’t necessarily mean pregnant women must spend a small fortune on what’s deemed “pregnancy-safe makeup” and “pregnancy-safe beauty products.” However, regardless of price, there are a few ingredients a mom with a growing bump should try to avoid, as they could be harmful to the fetus.

For example, high doses of retinoids have been linked to birth irregularities, so pregnant women should avoid them altogether. Also, salicylic acid — often used to treat acne — is considered unsafe for pregnancy if administered in high doses. In addition, make sure that your makeup and beauty products are free of chemicals like phthalates, talc, and formaldehyde and that your sunscreen doesn’t have oxybenzone. All these ingredients are known to pose potential risks to Mama and her baby and should be avoided.1

There are some alternative ingredients pregnant women can look for as they choose pregnancy-safe makeup and skin care products — including topical antioxidants like green tea and resveratrol. And vitamin C is always good as it boosts our skin’s health in the same way it boosts our immune system.1

Also, many companies on our list have EWG-verified products, which means they meet strict scientific standards for transparency and health and are given a two-part score for hazard and data availability. Finding EWG-verified pregnancy-safe skin care is a great way to ensure that whatever you put on your skin is safe. However, we know you’re tired and overwhelmed, so we did the homework for you!

Navigate skin changes during pregnancy: Learn about pregnancy-safe skincare ingredients and which pose a risk.]]>
Collage of skincare products that are safe to use during pregnancy.

Pregnancy comes with many changes—no more wine down Wednesdays, sushi boats, deli sandwiches, and venti Frappuccinos. But just when you thought you were already limited about what you put in your body, we’re here to share that it also matters what you put on your body. Finding pregnancy-safe skincare products is essential since your skin is the largest organ and is very porous. Anything you put on your face and body is easily absorbed. That includes your prized face washes, moisturizers, serums, and sunscreens that you use daily to keep your skin healthy and free of blemishes and dryness, thanks to pregnancy hormones.1,2

With many skin care products containing harmful chemicals, we’ve created a quick guide that breaks down harmful and safe ingredients and products we love and trust.

Common Skin Changes During Pregnancy

You should be aware of some common skin changes during pregnancy.

Melasma

Often referred to as chloasma or the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma is a skin condition causing brown or tan patches on the face as a result of an increase in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Expectant moms may notice these blotches on their cheeks, nose, forehead, chin, arms, or above their upper lip.3

While not all women get melasma, some are genetically predisposed, which can increase their chances. Some moms-to-be may have a family history of the condition, while others with a light-brown complexion and who were born in an area with high sun exposure are more prone to developing it. Women who’ve taken birth control pills are also more likely to develop this hyperpigmentation due to their high number of hormones.4

Acne

Unfortunately, pregnancy isn’t always all about the glow. Thanks to increased hormones in your body during the first trimester, your oil glands produce more natural oils and cause clogged pores and dreaded breakouts. If you suffered from acne before your pregnancy, you’re at higher risk of experiencing acne during pregnancy as well. Up to 43% of women experience acne while pregnant.5,6

Stretch Marks

Pregnancy and stretch marks almost feel synonymous with one another. Close to 90% of pregnant moms develop stretch marks during their pregnancy due to genetics, skin type, age, and birth weight. For many mommas-to-be, stretch marks appear on their belly since it stretches to make room for their growing baby. These tiger stripes, as some moms lovingly call them, can be pink, red, or a faint color depending on your skin tone and can also appear on your glutes, breasts, and thighs.7,8

Linea Nigra

Linea nigra, or “the pregnancy line,” is a dark vertical line that extends from your pubic bone up to your belly button during pregnancy. With each trimester, the line may darken and become more visible, especially for those with a darker complexion. Typically, around 20 weeks of gestation, a linea nigra will become noticeable.9

Skincare Product Ingredients to Avoid While Pregnant

If you’re unsure whether the products currently crowding your vanity are safe, we’ve created a short guide of ingredients that can be detrimental to your little one. Double-check your product labels to see if any of these substances are listed:

Retinoids

Retinoids are derived from vitamin A and are used to treat acne, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin texture. While it’s great for keeping your skin clear and youthful, it can cause serious harm to your growing baby. Studies have found that high doses of retinoids during pregnancy can increase the risk of fetal retinoid syndrome, characterized by a slew of physical birth defects in infants. Some differences range from heart abnormalities and excess fluid around a baby’s brain to growth delays and an increased chance of a cleft palate.10,11

While some over-the-counter skin care products may contain small amounts of retinoids, avoiding them is best. Keep an eye out for any vitamin A derivatives in topical treatments, including retinol, retinyl, and tretinoin, as well as prescribed oral medications, like isotretinoin.12,13

Salicylic Acid

Although there’s insufficient research to determine dosage amounts and potential fetal risks associated with salicylic acid during pregnancy, some experts recommend that pregnant moms add this acne fighter and exfoliant to their “do not use” list.14

The concern? Salicylic acid is related to aspirin, linked to various risks, including pregnancy loss and congenital defects, when taken in high doses. While it has not been backed by research, there may be a possibility that salicylic acid could have similar effects.15,16

Oxybenzone

An active ingredient commonly found in commercial sunscreens, oxybenzone has received a lot of backlash in recent years, with studies highlighting its effect on the environment and the reproductive health of animals. Oxybenzone is known to disrupt the function of organs in the body, such as the skin, kidneys, brain, and endocrine system. The chemical can also pass through the skin and the placenta, causing harmful effects on the development of a fetus during pregnancy.17,18,19

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is a topical skin-lightening agent for treating hyperpigmentation, such as dark spots and patches. While hydroquinone is highly effective at lightening the skin, it has received negative attention from the FDA, which has banned the use of the ingredient in over-the-counter products and deemed it unsafe for pregnant and non-expectant consumers.20,21

Hydroquinone limits the skin’s natural production of melanin, and it’s also considered a carcinogenic ingredient linked to rashes and eye injuries. More serious issues include thyroid disorder, leukemia, liver damage, and exogenous ochronosis, a permanent skin discoloration that’s a blue-black hue).22,23,24

Phthalates

Phthalates, a synthetic chemical that makes plastics soft and flexible, are used in many products families use daily—hair products, cosmetics, toys, food packaging, detergents, you name it. Unfortunately, plastic additives are known to be endocrine disruptors, meaning they can wreak havoc with normal hormone functions in both moms and babies.25,26

A study from the National Institutes of Health also discovered that pregnant mothers exposed to multiple phthalates during pregnancy had a higher chance of preterm birth. Additional research has identified several other health risks, from preeclampsia, maternal glucose disorders, and interference with thyroid functionality in moms leading to growth restriction, behavioral and cognitive disorders, and issues with the neuroendocrine system in infants.26,27,28

What to Look for in Skin Care Products During Pregnancy

Although you need to part ways with a handful of ingredients (at least for the next nine months of your pregnancy and if you plan to breastfeed), there is a silver lining for your skin. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has confirmed several safe additives to use in your pregnancy-safe skincare routine so you don’t have to say goodbye to your mornings and nights of pampering completely. Here are four ingredients that won’t bring harm to you and your baby:8

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide prevents acne-causing bacteria from growing on the skin and is considered safe for pregnant moms. Only a small amount of the antiseptic is absorbed through the skin using topical, over-the-counter acne products.2,29,30

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is on the yes list of ingredients moms can use while carrying. As a naturally occurring substance that the body produces in the eyes, joints, and skin, hyaluronic acid is a holy grail for pregnant mommas. It helps retain the skin’s moisture, flexibility, and elasticity—all common issues expectant mothers struggle with throughout their pregnancy.14,30,31

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that acts as an exfoliant for the skin to remove dead skin cells, treat acne and acne scars, and reduce spotting (dark patches, freckles, and sunspots). While ACOG has given glycolic acid the green light as a pregnancy-safe ingredient, it’s important to note that products should contain concentrations lower than 10 percent.32,33

Vitamin C

If you’re concerned about hyperpigmentation, vitamin C is a safe alternative in creams or serums to lighten your skin while pregnant. Vitamin C also has anti-aging properties that can protect your skin against damage from UV rays and also keep your skin looking younger with its ability to increase collagen in the skin.34,35

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is generally safe to use and is another substitute to help with inflamed acne and hyperpigmentation. Keep in mind there are not enough controlled studies on the usage of azelaic acid during pregnancy, but animal studies have not reported harmful effects on fetuses or newborns. It’s recommended to use azelaic acid on small surface areas of your skin and to avoid it within the first trimester.14,36,37

The start of the day as a mom is never easy. As soon as our feet hit the floor, there is a multitude of things that need to be done . . . and almost everything on the list is for someone else! Between preparing breakfasts, packing backpacks, checking the daily schedule, getting everyone where they need to be on time, and in tip-top shape, the last thing on our mind is our own hair! We spend our mornings catering to the needs of those who depend on us, and sometimes that ends up quite obvious in our appearance. But if you can manage a simple and easy hairstyle, it can change your day!

Fun and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Moms

I always fuss over getting the right ponytail, with matching bow to boot, on my girls. They always arrive at school clean and stylish! I feel particularly strong about this aspect of parenting. They are, of course, wearing hand-me-downs and are less than thrilled while I am scooping up their hair and looping elastic around it, but it makes me feel better as a Mom. Put together. Thoughtful.

I take pride in how my children present themselves because I take pride in caring for them. But, with all of this effort put into them, it is taken from some other place. That place: my hair! Here are a few easy hairstyles to do on yourself in the morning so you can feel confident in yourself and your appearance! The only thing you will need is a brush, your favorite dry shampoo, and some small rubber bands for most of them.

Thick Braid Trio

Pull-out, or thick-looking braids, are simple and easy while being stylish. They give off a very carefree vibe! You can choose if you want to do one braid (think Elsa-style) or two (Anna’s look). This is my go-to hairstyle for a park playdate, trip to the zoo, or anything outside and fun. It’s simple enough to throw a hat or headband on yet elevates your look from the regular ponytail.

This style is perfect for day 2 or 3 (or even 4!) hair. You just need a good brush, your favorite dry shampoo, and I prefer to use small, clear rubber bands to hold them. They give the style a more mature look, and they tend to hold on stronger for all of the runnings around Moms have to do! This technique can be turned into three looks: classic braid, double braid, or a braided headband.

Classic

Fun, Pretty, and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Moms

To start, pull out two face-framing pieces of hair that you can leave down. You can hold them with an extra rubber band or clip to make sure they don’t get braided back. I tend to leave a few pieces out around my face to slim my cheeks and soften my appearance. Choose which side you’d like to have your hair on. I always choose my braid to go over my left shoulder because I consider that to be my good side. But, your choice!

Brush your hair, and then spray your dry shampoo all over, even past the root. I like to spray the most towards the bottom of the hair. Braid the hair in the classic way, sectioning it into three equal parts and lifting your outside pieces over the middle strand. End the braid and add your rubber band or hair tie about ¾ of the way down. Try to leave about 2 inches of hair out. Once that is tied, give the newly formed braid a spray of dry shampoo. Then you will gently tug on the outer loops of the braids, creating thicker loops and giving an overall fatter look to your braid! I like to find smaller pieces after and pull them out completely to give a really messy look to the style.

Double

Fun, Pretty, and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Moms

To create this style as a double braid, you will section the hair into two parts, left and right, and do the same steps for both sides. These braids will have less hair in each, so you may not be able to pull as much hair out of each loop.

Headband

Fun, Pretty, and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Moms

To construct this style into a headband look, you will follow the same instructions, but you will need to use a few bobby pins, as well. This look is a little more sophisticated and put together. It can be a trendy look for family photos or a daytime get-together! If you have long hair past your shoulders, you will create this look with one braid. If you have shorter hair, shoulder-length or above, you will likely need to have two braids to get the look.

Once you follow the previous steps and have your thick braids ready, you will lift them and place them across the top of your head to tuck behind your opposite ear. Pin in place with two bobby pins. Repeat with the second braid to the opposite ear and pin in place. You can also choose to leave some of your lower hair out to create a half-up, half-down look or put the rest in a ponytail! Either way, it’s super cute and fun!

The “I Woke Up Like This”!

Fun, Pretty, and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Moms

This hairstyle is my absolute favorite. Consider it the grab-and-go of the hair world. Since we barely even have time to shower between the laundry, bath time, groceries, work deadlines, and general Mom duties, this hairstyle requires no effort after our quick late-night rinse-off.

After my shower, I like to add a sea salt spray or mousse into my wet hair. Then you tightly braid your hair into as many strands as you want. I have very thick hair, so I like to do 3 or 4 different braided sections to optimize all of my hair to dry. If you like a looser look, just do one or two braids. The goal is just for your hair to dry while you’re sleeping in the pattern of the crisscross sections. It leaves you with lightly waved hair that can be easy to leave down, throw into a top-knot (pictured here), or tuck under a baseball cap. It’s an effortless style that helps you look like a put-together Mom on the go! Practice makes perfect, and after a few times, you will find exactly how many braids you need to get that perfect beachy wave!

Plus, you can wake up like this AGAIN! Is there anything better than looking cute two days in a row?! It makes me feel so put together to nail my hair twice in a week. Using the cute and easy waves you’ve created the day before with your salt spray and braids to dry, you can get a new look the next day by just changing it up a little bit by adding a top bun!

Fun, Pretty, and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Moms

This half-up, half-down hairstyle is great for a girl’s night out or a concert in the park. When your hair is wavy, it means it has more volume, so it isn’t as close to the scalp as it usually is. To create the top bun, separate your hair behind your ears and tousle it around to “mess it up” a bit. Loosely sweep it back and loop the elastic around the hair once, creating a ponytail. Then wrap it around again, only pulling half of the hair through, creating a bun look. Pull strands out and tuck into the elastic for a messier look!

Earth to Mommy

Fun, Pretty, and Easy Hairstyles for Busy Moms

Do you ever feel like you crash-landed on a different planet since you entered motherhood? I find some days I am so out of sorts trying to keep all of my little aliens in line! Space buns are the perfect addition for an out-of-this-world look! I love these cute little buns for a mom’s lunch at school or a work-from-home day you know you’ll have to turn your camera on. They are young and stylish, and no one will know they only took a few moments! For this hairstyle, you will need hairspray, a comb, and elastics.

Remember Baby Spice from The Spice Girls? You are going to start out looking a bit like her. Once again, choose one or two pieces of hair from around your face that flatter your profile. I always take a rather large piece from my left side to give the allusion of a soft side bang. Then you are going to part your hair in the center and make two very high ponytails.

You want to make sure they are only about 4 inches from your forehead, as they will slide toward the back a bit from the weight of your buns! Secure both ponies with your elastic. Spray the ponytails with hairspray to make them “sticky.” Wrap each section around the elastic you’ve secured, like a cinnamon bun! Then secure that new shape with another elastic. Gently pull on the section, as they will be tight-looking, and it will give them a messy circle shape! Spray again to keep in place.

Feel Like the “Old” You With These Hairstyles

Our minds and bodies are now occupied by so many other’s needs and wants. It can be hard to remember that even the smallest pleasures can make the biggest impact. Throwing on some lipstick, wearing a new bra, or doing our hair can help us feel more like the old us. It can help us welcome back the girl we may have forgotten about . . . or at least have been neglecting a little bit.

The old me was a cosmetology teacher and stylist, helping others feel beautiful daily. This job required me to look my best, wearing hair and makeup almost daily. When I left my career to become a stay-at-home mom, the hair and makeup have taken a backseat. These simple hairstyles have helped me break the cycle of feeling stuck in motherhood. Feeling like my hair is in-tact for the day brings me such confidence and comfort – so I can focus on all the daily madness . . . and love.

A day at the salon or spa seems like a distant memory, or maybe wishful thinking. But doing something that seems as mundane as getting a haircut can do wonders for our confidence – and our appearance! We read and hear about how important self-care is when we are so consumed caring for others. But sometimes, when we finally get our respite, maybe dad comes home from work early, or your sweet mother offers to watch the baby, and we don’t know what to do with our time. It seems like we get a little bit of freedom, and we aren’t sure what part of our life to tend to!

A fresh haircut may be just what the doctor ordered! The whole process of getting groomed is good for the soul. Fun conversation with your stylist, a relaxing and cleansing wash that you don’t have to do yourself, blow-drying and styling, and a new overall look. It’s the simplest way to get a fresh start.

Talk to Your Stylist About Your Hair Needs

One of the most important parts of getting a haircut, besides taking care of yourself, is getting a style that’s easy to incorporate into your busy life as a mom. Just as there are different seasons in parenthood, there are different levels of ease needed for your hair.

My kids are still very young, all 5 and under. I am not currently working outside of the home. Because of these circumstances, I choose to have long hair that is all the same length. During my consultation with my stylist, I went over my typical weekday mornings and routines with her. She was able to point out helpful tips about dry time, styling needs and products, and the longevity of my cut.

Make sure you chat with your preferred stylist about what ideas can fit your needs at this particular season of life! For my one-length cut, the daily maintenance is low. It’s effortless to leave it down or throw it into a quick ponytail. It also looks pretty when I take the time to curl it for the occasional date night or meeting that I have to turn my camera on for. All moms’ circumstances are different – so finding what works for you is key in identifying your perfect mom haircut!

Easy and Cute Haircuts for Moms

The One-Length Haircut

Portrait of smiling young woman in park

If you’re like me, you may consider your hair routine as low maintenance. A good hair day means there isn’t paint or other remnants of daily crafts glued into the strands. I still have some nighttime wakeups from my youngest. So mornings are still a little tough getting all of us up and out the door to preschool or other activities. What feels the best and easiest for me is pulling my hair into a sleek ponytail. That way, I can throw on a headband if I plan to hit the gym or a baseball cap if we are spending the day outside. My favorite part of this haircut as a busy mom of three is that I have the flexibility of letting it air dry. I tend to shower at night and then braid it. So when I wake up, I have a small wave and a dry, tousled look.

Keeping your hair long, but not too long, is key. Making sure it goes past the shoulders is a good way to ensure that all hair will reach your elastic band when you put it up. Making sure it’s not too long, however, will also keep the weight down. The more hair you have, the more uncomfortable it can be when it’s up because your hair may be pulling on your scalp.

The “Mom Cut” Haircut

Woman With Blonde Mid Length Lob Hairstyle

The classic bob has kind of adopted the nickname of the “mom cut.” It stems from a big change that a lot of moms go through after they give birth. I remember feeling the extreme need for change as soon as I gave birth to my first. I ended up at the salon wanting a short hairstyle and a fun color. It felt good and a bit liberating. It was a way to take back the control over my body that I felt like I had lost a little bit throughout my pregnancy and birthing experience.

Woman with a bob haircut outside smirking at the camera.

A chin-length bob is an adorable and convenient cut for the busy mom! If you work outside of the home or have time constraints during the morning that limit you from spending much time on your hair, this cut can be a lifesaver. It doesn’t require too much skill – just a round brush and a blow dryer, plus your favorite everyday products. Depending on the thickness of your hair, you and your hairdresser can talk about strategies or lengths that work for you. The drying time on this short haircut can be less than 10 minutes!

The “mom cut” also beautifully frames your face and gives you a polished look that you barely even have to try for. Beware, you may start a trend among your mom squad and have everyone hitting the salon chair for the big chop!

The Eye Length Bang Haircut

Portrait of a beautiful middle-aged woman outdoors.

Sometimes we stare into the mirror and repeat, “I am awake . . . I am awake,” in hopes of looking that way. Long hours caring for a new life can be draining and take a toll on our morning routines. Because of this, cute and stylish eye-length bangs can be the perfect cut for the effortlessly chic look you’re craving as a new mom.

Bangs are sophisticated by design. Think Audrey Hepburn covered in diamonds – even though we may be dripping in spit-up! Bangs are a quick fix to any rut of monotony. They spice up your look with minimal effort. The drying and styling time is only a minute or two of your morning since it’s such an overall small section of your hair. You have the freedom to take your creative, or time-crunched, liberty with the rest of the hair. Bangs look fabulous, accompanied by a messy bun, sleek ponytail, or even leaving your hair down.

Collage of women who have bangs.

Bangs can make such a statement, too. And that confidence boost that comes along with a bold haircut could be just what you need to boost your mood. When you look good, you tend to feel good. When I was early in motherhood, I wish I would have tried this cut and style for myself. I felt frumpy with my messy bun and stringy hair, but I didn’t care enough to put effort into myself. For some reason, I was too stubborn to spend a couple of hours at the salon, and I regret it. I think these bold and beautiful bangs would have boosted my coolness to a level I never imagined!

Sometimes a fresh cut is all you need!

It’s hard to buy into the magic of a good and convenient haircut. But I can promise you, as a mom and a cosmetologist, that it is real. The magic of motherhood is beautiful and wonderous. But, let’s face it, most of the time, we look like the little rabbit that’s been pulled out of the hat. So drop your precious little bundle of joy off with a trusted loved one and head to the salon. Your stylist will become a magician for a little while you rest all of your motherly duties. You’ll walk out of there feeling refreshed and refined, all because of a simple haircut. Talk about magic!

Before having my little girl, I loved getting dressed up, doing a full face of makeup, slapping on at least two face masks a week, and prioritizing plenty of pampering time. These days I’m putting in effort when I change from my “at home” leggings to my “fancy” leggings. My priorities have changed, but I still want to feel good, and to be honest, I sometimes get shocked when I pass an unexpected mirror. Who is this woman? She looks a little different than who I remember from those hazy pre-baby days. I no longer have the time to commit to my beauty regime like I used to. But what if having another baby (or many more) could actually help with anti-aging?

Can Having More Children Be the Fountain of Youth?

A study conducted in 2016 suggests that having more children might have anti-aging properties.1 The bags under my eyes beg to differ, but I was curious, so I took a closer look at the research. A study by Professor Neopmnaschy and post-grad researcher Barha found that the DNA in women who gave birth to more (five) children was affected. Those with more children had longer telomeres, the protective tips at the end of a DNA strand. These bits of our DNA are responsible for cell replication (and turnover) and longevity.

Researchers believe this is due to dramatic surges of the hormone Estrogen during pregnancy. Estrogen has antioxidant properties that protect telomeres from shortening. Once a telomere gets too short, it can no longer reproduce or replicate itself, which is a traditional sign of aging – we develop wrinkles or see changing texture in our skin and hair because the cells don’t keep “turning over” at the same rate anymore. We often see this in our hair and skin first, as they are areas in the body where cells reproduce more often.

Before you shout “sign me up” and start producing Brady Bunch quantities of children to reduce those crow’s feet, hold your horses. As always, with most things, there’s more to the story!

Turns Out, Having Support Helps

The study was also conducted in a Guatemalan community where women receive more intergenerational or community support in raising their children. So, it can’t be ruled out that better support during child-rearing years was also behind some of their youthfulness. The researchers suggested that women have more metabolic energy when they receive support and don’t have to raise children alone. Instead of chasing after children all day by themselves, picking up all the odd socks dotted around the house, or making dinners nobody wants to eat, their energy can be used to maintain tissue (skin, nails, hair, etc.) in the body which helps with anti-aging.

On The Other Hand, Motherhood Can Be a Huge Stressor

Conversely, other research tells us that pregnancy can actually take a significant toll on our bodies.2 In some circumstances, telomeres in women with multiple children are shorter than in those with one or no children. When we are juggling the demands of family life, particularly if we are doing it alone or with little support, we can see increased physical and emotional stress levels. Stress impacts our immunity and general physical health (particularly high blood pressure) and is also shown to reduce the length of telomeres.3

So, while the science is out on this one, I’m going to run with the idea of additional support and the importance of self-care being a significant influencer on anti-aging and aging gracefully. With that in mind, I’m off to sneak in 5-minutes of self-care! Who knew hiding in the pantry, scrolling through social media while cramming a biscuit into my mouth, could be so beneficial for my appearance? I can feel my wrinkles receding as we speak!

“Oh, Mommy! Your fingers are beautiful! They’re so PINK!”

From the moment I heard my daughter say those words to me as she adoringly admired my fresh manicure (a rarity and a luxury for me), I knew I was in big trouble. Sure enough, the next words out of her mouth begged me to make her nails pink too.

Sigh. I had wanted to avoid putting fingernail polish on my little girl’s nails for as long as possible. Being a pretty naturally-minded individual (read: a hippie), I knew what kinds of toxic chemicals were loaded into all those pretty little colored bottles. I was not about to put all of those harsh ingredients onto my perfect baby’s body.

But then I discovered Piggy Paint and I knew my reputation as a good mother would be saved for the time being, at least in my daughter’s eyes.

What Is Piggy Paint?

piggy paint, baby chick

Piggy Paint is a non-toxic, low-odor, nail polish completely free of harsh chemicals and formulated to dry to a hard, durable finish. It is safe for kids and safe for pregnant mamas! The nail polish comes in a wide variety of colors, too.

How Do I Use Piggy Paint?

piggy paint, baby chick

Piggy Paint is applied very simply, but should always be used by an adult or under an adult’s supervision.

  • Wash hands with soap and thoroughly dry.
  • Apply 2-3 think coats of your favorite Piggy Paint color.
  • Air dry for 60 seconds.
  • Blow dry nails on low setting for 60 seconds (this step is optional but will maximize chip resistance).

So easy, right? My daughter was thrilled to be able to choose from the wide assortment of colors. She chose Forever Fancy for her fingernails and toes.

My little princess was over the moon excited to finally get her nails painted just like mommy. And I was thrilled to see her joy over something as simple as a home manicure. I felt completely comfortable putting Piggy Paint on her nails and I was very pleased at how easily it went on and the coverage it provided. I found Piggy Paint to be easy to use, low to no odor, and it dried much quicker than I expected, which is a HUGE bonus when you have a very active toddler who can’t sit still longer than five minutes!

I also love that when we’re ready to take off her polish, Piggy Paint has a low-odor, hypoallergenic, acetone-free remover that will do the job.

I am so excited I got a chance to try Piggy Paint and I can honestly tell you that I will be using this nail polish on my baby’s tiny toes and fingers for as long as she’ll let me! Piggy Paint makes this hippie mama feel much more at ease about giving my little princess all the manicures her little heart desires.

Piggy Paint is available at Target stores (another reason to love Target!) and Amazon.

10 Tips for Better, Healthier Skin

Our skin. It’s the largest organ of our bodies, but is one that we often forget about. Until it’s too late… It’s crucial to take care of our skin. Why, you ask? Besides it helping us to look and feel our best, our skin breathes, removes impurities, and helps regulate our body temperature. It’s surprising how quickly the aging process can speed up if we neglect to take care of it. Prevention is key, ladies and gents — you don’t want to wait and have it be too late.

Whatever you have done to your skin in the past, now is the time to make a change. If you’re wanting better, healthier skin, here are ten tips to help you have a radiant complexion all year long:

Tip #1: Drink More Water

Staying hydrated helps our bodies and minds in so many ways — one of those is hydrating our skin. (Admittedly, this is something that I also need to get better at myself.) We are supposed to drink at least 8 glasses of water (if not more) per day. If our skin is not getting a sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will cause our skin to become dry, tight and flaky. Not good! Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling. So in essence, drink more water and prevent those wrinkles!

Tip #2: Protect Yourself from the Sun

No matter if it is summer or winter, we need to be choosing skincare products that protect our skin from the sun year round. Doing so can help reduce the harmful effects of the sun, which (as we know) causes early aging (such as wrinkles and age spots), increases the risk of skin cancer, and other skin problems.

For complete sun protection, use at least 15 SPF sunscreen daily, wear protective clothing, and avoid being out in the sun between the hours of 10am and 2pm — when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

Tip #3: Don’t Smoke

Did you know that smoking actually causes your skin to look older and causes wrinkles? That’s because smoking narrows the blood vessels in the outermost layers of our skin, which then decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are vital to overall skin health. Crazy, right?!

Smoking also damages collagen and elastin, which are the fibers that give our skin strength and elasticity. Also, the repetitive expressions that you make when smoking (such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke) contribute to wrinkles. Smoking in general is bad for you — this is just another reason to quit!

Tip #4: Use Hypoallergenic/ Organic Make-Up

There are so many different chemicals in makeup that can negatively affect your skin. Choose products that are made for your skin type. I recommend using hypoallergenic makeup and/or organic makeup to help avoid any issues. This will help meet the needs of your specific skin type and eye type, especially if you have sensitive skin like me.

Tip #5: Use Safe Products Made for Your Skin Type

All images taken by Creative Clicks Photography

The best way to take care of your skin is to find the right products that are specially designed for your skin type. Dry skin does not have the same needs as oily skin. Know your skin type and find the right products for you.

Tip #6: Remove Your Makeup

I personally have dry, sensitive skin. And the first thing to know when taking care of sensitive skin is that it begins with makeup removal. In order to not stress your skin, to allow it to breathe overnight, and to respect its natural balance, you must remove your makeup every night before you go to bed. Make sure to use a chemically-free, pH-neutral makeup remover.

Tip #7: Exfoliate

Exfoliation is huge! You want to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week. Whatever product you choose, it should be effective yet gentle on your skin. Again, choose a chemical-free, pH-neutral exfoliation product.

Tip #8: Moisturize Your Skin

In order to keep the skin well moisturized, it is important to choose a daily moisturizing skin care product that balances the level of water within the skin. I have very dry skin so I have to have a product that I feel confident won’t make me look oily, but will make me feel moisturized all throughout the day. This cream is safe and perfect for my dry skin.

Tip #9: Don’t Forget Your Lips

We always forget about our lips when we think of skincare. We need to be using a restorative cream/balm for our lips throughout the day. Continue to reapply to this fragile area as often as you feel is necessary. I always have some lip balm in my bag for that exact reason.

Tip #10: Get Your Beauty Sleep

Try to get 8-hours of sleep every night if you can. I know, easier said than done. Especially if you are pregnant or have little ones, this will probably not happen. The problem is, if you don’t get enough sleep, your skin will begin looking tired. It will sag and cause you to have bags under your eyes.

If you’re having late nights and early mornings with your little ones, that just makes the rest of these tips that much more important! Let’s do this — for our skin and for ourselves!

What are your skincare tips to radiant skin? Anything that you would add?

I can’t speak for all mothers, but for me, I feel like the majority of my life is centered around the needs of those around me. Don’t get me wrong. I’m SO not complaining as I have always had a serving heart, even since childhood. It’s a big part of who I am. I’m a giver. I love to shower my loved ones with gifts, affection, and most importantly, my time/attention. I love that I’m the person my family and friends want to celebrate things with because I make them feel special. I love that I’m the one they come to for solutions and problem solving, and I love that they know I will always listen and be ready to serve.

One thing I’ve learned over the years about my personality trait is, usually, the last person I am serving is myself. I tend to put my own nourishment, sleep, and wardrobe aside. I feel like A LOT of mommies do this, and over New Years’, I decided to make a big change in 2016. I no longer had little tiny babies to take care of. Now that my boys are preschoolers, it seemed like the perfect time to shift a portion of my caregiving back onto me. Putting on my own “oxygen mask” first, so to speak! I kicked off my resolution with a major wardrobe overhaul. Taking the time to curate a closet that worked for my lifestyle and made me feel beautiful was such an awakening. So I decided, “why stop here?” And when I was approached by an old friend from my competitive cheerleading days asking if I was interested in trying out a new (to me) skincare line, I thought, “why not”?

I’m really so glad I said YES because what it made me realize was that it’s truly easier than I thought to take care of my skin and to take a moment each day solely for ME.

I’m a self-proclaimed makeup and product junkie, but, I will admit, I haven’t taken amazing care of the canvas I’m painting. I would find an amazing product, get into a great routine, and then a few months later, I’d be back to my old habits… Using only a makeup remover wipe as I was falling into bed. Fortunately, I have been blessed with fairly decent skin that put up with my neglect, but as I’m tiptoeing the big 3-0, I began to notice there were certain improvements to be made. I wanted that “glowing from within” youthful look back (you know, the one you long for when you look back at pictures from your pre-kids days). I wanted the under-eye circles to disappear. I wanted to start preventing any wrinkles that were potentially on the horizon.

image4

I’ve rounded up my top picks for saving face as a full-time mom. Many products in the Rodan + Fields line up are amazing, but today, I’m sharing what you can use quickly and easily as a busy and on-the-go mama. So here’s what I’ve been up to!

Full disclosure, I haven’t abandoned my beloved makeup remover wipes. That’s step (admittedly still) number one. We’re keeping it real around here! I then wash my face with Cetaphil, my forever favorite gentle cleanser. Post clean up, I do a quick once over with a needle roller. I received one years ago at Christmas from my aunt and never knew its full purpose until I was introduced to Rodan + Fields improved version (which I can’t wait to upgrade to!). The roller really allows product to work itself into the skin, which leads to better results. Honestly, you just have to try it, and you’ll see what I mean. Everything absorbs better, and you truly feel a difference. I think it’s something you need to experience and I promise you won’t go back!

I’ve also gotten hooked on the Redefine Multi-Function Eye Cream. I put it on all around my orbital bone after using the roller, and it really is like a little miracle worker. I sincerely think it’s a great product, especially for exhausted moms like myself. Once a week, I take an extra few minutes to exfoliate using the R+F Microdermabrasion Paste. I absolutely love how smooth my skin feels after using this paste and that “glow” I mentioned earlier totally comes out after removing that dry and dead skin that’s getting in the way!

Saving Face: Skin Solutions For Busy Moms

My results speak for themselves. I’m on the left in this picture, and while I’m wearing makeup, it’s a sheer and minimal daytime look, and you can totally see my REAL, unfiltered skin. The glow is back, there are no dark circles, and I get compliments on my skin all the time! I’m thrilled that I’ve seen such a tangible improvement to the way my skin looks and feels by just taking a few moments for myself. Saving my face and my sanity with a little self-love is a big lesson I’m still learning as a mommy. Even those with a heart for serving others, working mamas, SAHM’s, teachers, nurses, and beyond have to take a moment each day to give themselves some grace, a few minutes to relax and take care of that one accessory they’ll carry with them for life… Their skin!

If you have any questions about what I’m using and want to know more about these products, contact your local R+F consultant, and I’m sure they would love the chance to educate you more about the line and tell you their story and what R+F means to them!

Tell me, what’s your nightly skin care routine look like? Could you use more “me” maintenance time? I would love to hear what’s working for you!
