Pregnant mother and her son little cute toddler child playing and relaxing on the sea beach at summer time.

When expecting your second child, you may feel like you have so much on your to-do list that you can barely see straight! You start to worry about important issues. Like how much time is left to prepare the new nursery, when or how to return to work, and what changes your relationship with your firstborn will go through. If you haven’t even had time to start writing them down, I don’t blame you! The latter on this list has probably been sitting on your mind since the moment you found out you are expecting again. What about my other child?

Children are resilient. They can adapt and deal with change quickly when in a loving environment. It may feel like adding a sibling will rock their world, but have faith! Your child is probably more excited than you think about the impending new arrival. I’m sure you’ve been spending time reading books, having conversations, and preparing them for what’s to come. But there is one way you can guarantee to help them feel excited, included, and loved before the new baby arrives. Here are 4 reasons you should take your soon-to-be older child on your babymoon.

4 Reasons to Take Your Soon-To-Be Older Child on Your Babymoon

1. It Helps Them to Feel Included

The planning of a child can feel like it is only the responsibility of the parents. We are focused on our upcoming birth’s financial, emotional, and physical aspects. But some duties and changes come along with becoming an older sibling.

A babymoon, which is a trip dedicated to enjoying quality time or going on a last adventure before the birth of a new baby, is the perfect time to include your older child in your plans. You can chat about ways to ease the transition, what feeding the baby may look like, go over what your new days at home will entail, and let the older sibling pick out a gift for their new little brother or sister!

2. It Teaches Them the Importance of Quality Time

Even if your child is too young to understand the wording, they will know when time is carved out for them. The most important aspect of making someone feel loved and appreciated is planning something special for them. Taking your child on a babymoon with you shows them how much you enjoy being with them.

Remind them while you’re traveling that you will still very much be available to them, but you will have to focus on the baby, too. You can explain how they have your attention first on this trip and that baby will need to borrow some of that when they are born. Focusing on your older child is still significant. And the memories you make on your babymoon will be fresh in their mind when the time comes!

3. They Will Learn the Meaning of Individual Relationships

You may be panicking that your child will feel left out when the new baby arrives. But your babymoon may be able to put it in a different perspective! Your travels will show them how you have a separate relationship with your partner, with them, and with the baby in your belly.

They will start to understand how each connection is different yet significant in its own way. Your child will see how your partner cares for you, perhaps holding your bag as you walk onto the plane. They will see how you smile when they hug you, feeling the relationship they cherish with you in their arms. They will witness you caring for your unborn, and you’ll be able to show them ways to adjust to a new baby in the home.

4. It Will Be a Ton of Fun!!!

That’s right! I’m encouraging you to travel with your child, the soon-to-be big brother or sister because it will be fun! Your child loves you and loves spending time with you. What better way for your family to enjoy each other in this current state than a babymoon? Your family dynamic will never be the same as it is now. So take advantage of it! It will also be the last time you will travel as a family of three. Also, the memories you will make are priceless — the bookmark at the end of this chapter.

For all the daunting tasks that seem to pile up toward the end of pregnancy, this checkmark on your list is one you will never forget. Grab your laptop, sit your firstborn in your lap, and get to planning your babymoon! This trip will help your child feel included, show them the importance of quality time, teach them about relationships within your family, and show them a great time! Enjoy your babymoon with your soon-to-be big sibling!

Even going down the block to a playgroup with a baby in tow can take Marie Kondo levels of organization for planning and packing. Before you have to deal with diaper bags and baby gear, take the opportunity to get away and relax with your significant other. Babymoons are cocktail-free vacations, but they are still a fun and relaxing way to get away and unwind while you’re pregnant and before the arrival of your new edition. Here is why you should take a babymoon before each baby.

A Babymoon Will Help You Reconnect With Your Partner

Many couples experience stress and difficulties following the birth of their first child. This is especially true for couples whose first child is born within the initial five years of marriage. Your baby’s early development is affected by the quality of parent relationships.1 So, boosting your chances of maintaining a healthy, loving bond is smart. Research on the benefits of travel reveals that couples can improve communication, reduce the possibility of getting a divorce, and strengthen their bond by taking time off to be together. Traveling together can also increase your sense of well-being in the relationship.2 This is why we recommend taking a vacation with your partner while pregnant!

Unfortunately, the United States has the lowest average vacation days per year for workers, coming in at 12.5, according to a 2022 report. Meanwhile, on average, workers in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Japan get over 20 days of vacation. Germany and France have the most allotted vacation time — 28.5 days on average.3 Sadly, many Americans don’t even take their full vacation days due to concerns about the economy and their job security. Many studies highlight work dissatisfaction due to long hours and few breaks being tied to increased stress at home while trying to balance family, pleasure, and quality time.4

Leisure time can increase contentment and reduce stress while also increasing relationship satisfaction. Hectic family routines can cause high levels of stress and dissatisfaction. Traveling and spending time together away from these hectic routines enhances feelings of togetherness. Researchers have shown that couples who vacation together have closer, more intimate bonds and are happier. Divorce rates are even lower among those who take trips and time away together.5

You’ll Have More Opportunity To Get Outdoors and Be Active

Getting outdoors, going for walks, and exploring a new place are fantastic reasons to go on a babymoon. Walking is the ideal form of exercise during pregnancy, yet most women don’t get enough of it. Research shows that the reason for this is usually a lack of time.6 Getting away somewhere without a busy schedule can provide ample time for activity, especially outdoors. Walking may help prevent and alleviate fatigue, back pain, and nausea, as well as reduce stress.6,8

Although exercise is recommended during pregnancy, it is essential to be careful about overheating if you’re traveling somewhere with a toasty climate.9 It might be best to choose a babymoon destination that is relatively mild. This can help you avoid any risks of overheating while still enjoying the ability to go for walks and explore the outdoors.

Melt Away Stress With Maternity Spa Treatments

Check your destination for nearby pregnancy-friendly activities, such as prenatal massage.10 Some resorts even have onsite maternity spa service, midnight snacks, daily breakfast for two, and other perks as part of their babymoon package. Massage therapy can improve circulation and quality of sleep, improving energy and vitality. You can even beat chronic back pain and anxiety with therapeutic prenatal massage.10,11

As if being away with your loved one on vacation while pregnant wasn’t enough to put you on cloud nine, massage can actually alter your state of mind. Relaxation and stress hormones change for the better during and after a massage.10 Enjoy those hormones working for you instead of against you for once! Be sure to look for a certified massage therapist with training in working with pregnant women. A prenatal massage therapist may have a table with a hole in it so you can lie on your stomach. However, lying on your side is safer, so your massage therapist should have the proper pillows for comfortable side-lying.12

Other safe spa treatments for pregnant women include skin treatments such as certain facials, as well as manicures and pedicures.13,14 Make sure the place is well-ventilated if you are getting a polish, so you’re not breathing in fumes.13 Some spas will have non-toxic polish choices. Toxins in polishes that you should be careful of include dibutyl phthalate, toluene, and formaldehyde.13 If this concerns you, bring your toxin-free nail polish.

Spa treatments are mostly safe while pregnant, but stay away from saunas and hot tubs.13 Also, avoid facial treatments that include toxins, such as chemical peels that contain beta hydroxy acid.14,15

Tips for a Healthy and Safe Babymoon

Whether you choose a prepackaged babymoon holiday or design your own, you should know a few things before planning your trip. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that occasional air travel is safe if your pregnancy is healthy and you don’t have any complications. As long as you observe the same precautions for air travel as the general population, flying while pregnant is considered safe up to 36 weeks gestation.7

Medical concerns like edema or venous thrombotic events are extremely rare, even in pregnant women.16,17,18 But if you’re concerned, pack support stockings and get up to move around occasionally. Avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing, and drink lots of water. Be aware that although most commercial airlines allow pregnant women to fly up to 36 weeks of gestation, some restrict pregnant women from flying internationally and even during earlier stages of pregnancy. Some airlines require proper documentation of gestational age for proof.7 Check with the airline you choose to be sure you won’t encounter any rude surprises.

Now you have all the info you need to take a babymoon before every baby and enjoy a relaxing vacation while pregnant. All that’s left is to start planning your getaway. Happy travels, mamas!

10 Reasons to Take a Babymoon

A new fad of taking a “babymoon” has hit the western culture hard, and we’re all about it! If you don’t know what a babymoon is, it’s a relaxing or romantic vacation taken by parents-to-be before their baby is born. Deciding to buy into the fad and go is step one. And then figuring out where and what to do and then for how long . . . That’s the fun part.

There is so much buzz around this new “moon” we get to take, but where and when did this start? I don’t hear our parents or grandparents talking about their babymoons, so what’s the deal?

From what I can gather, the term babymoon was coined from the British author and childbirth educator Sheila Kitzinger. But how she originally conceived of a babymoon wasn’t as an extravagant vacation planned before the baby arrived, but for after delivery. Babymoon: A time spent at home with just mom, dad, and baby to bond and get used to each other, arguably not very romantic, but important none-the-less.

Are babymoons worth all of the buzz, money spent, and time off work? I think, yes! Here is why.

1. You won’t get this time back.

This is time you will never get again. You are now going to have children for the rest of your life. While I firmly believe in continuing to take vacations alone with your partner after children, the hassle of child care on top of pet care, and time off work is just an added stress that makes vacations a lot trickier and a lot less carefree.

2. An opportunity to rest.

Taking time out of the daily grind to just be with your partner and get away somewhere to relax and recharge is good for the soul. Read some books, maybe even ones that don’t have to do with delivery or baby routines. Enjoy sleeping when you can wherever and however you can.

3. Invest in your relationship.

If you are taking a babymoon with your partner, really be engaged while you have this time together. Even infants who don’t do a whole lot other than sleep and eat still drastically change the dynamic of the relationship and putting in some really good quality time before having a baby really brings the romance back at a time when the world as you know it will be turned upside down for a while. You will have to find a new normal.

4. Try new things.

New food, new culture, new town, maybe just a new outfit! Whatever it is, do it because you can. It’s fun to try new things, perhaps something you’ve always wanted to do and never found the time, and now time seems a little more precious, so you do it now. Get out of your comfort zone and make new memories.

5. Take time to plan for baby and postpartum life.

With uninterrupted quality time, this would be an excellent opportunity to nail down a name, or who will be in the delivery room, what to do in case of an emergency, or even small things like who takes what nighttime feed or what kind of paternity leave you have planned. Getting the details nailed down while you’re not distracted will make coming home feel refreshing.

6. Use the time away to communicate honestly.

Share intimate things that have gotten pushed aside with all of the excitement around the pregnancy. If there have been hurt feelings, make it right. If there are some fears one or both of you have, share them. Nothing can be fixed if they aren’t communicated. Bringing a baby home can cause unaddressed problems to the surface, ones that you might not even know you have. So anything that is under the surface that you DO know about work through them now, so they don’t become a stumbling block later.

7. A chance to take maternity photos.

Get beautiful photos done! I can’t think of a better way to remember your babymoon than with professional photos you can cherish forever.

8. Treat it as one final splurge.

This is one last fun adventure where it is still the two of you to splurge on before diapers, wipes, and doctor bills start taking all of your money!

9. Because people love them.

No one is ever sad they went; it’s a great opportunity to have even if it’s a very simple and low key getaway.

10. Because you can!

Whether this is baby number one or baby number 10, taking time away with your partner before adding another human to the family dynamic is important. Refocusing attention to each other and not on the busy-ness of life will keep the romance and communication alive. Putting in the work of going and connecting will always pay off.

The time before having a baby is so exciting. Everything feels like a “last time,” and in a way it is. This won’t be the LAST vacation you take (hopefully), but it will be the last one before this baby comes, and that makes it all the more special.

A “babymoon” is defined as a time when a couple goes on vacation before their baby is born. Looking back, I’m not exactly sure why my husband and I thought it would be a good idea to go on a babymoon to San Antonio with our preschooler and toddler. But we did. And we never will again…

How NOT to Babymoon on the San Antonio Riverwalk

My “day job” usually allows me to accompany my husband on many of his (few) business trips during the year. Well, the opportunity to go to San Antonio came up, and knowing that we would soon welcome Baby Number Three into our family — meaning we would never leave the house again — we decided it might be fun to take the entire Tomes brood, especially since the family-friendly hotel was right on the San Antonio Riverwalk.

San Antonio, Riverwalk, Texas attractions,

I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

For one, I had overlooked the fact that my two-year-old would need to take a nap in the middle of the day in our hotel room. The same hotel room that the three and a half year old and I were occupying. This did not go well, as a sane person probably would have realized before the fact.

Also, my husband had conferences and workshops to attend during the day, so I was left alone with my precious monsters (I mean, babies). I had (wrongly) assumed we would trek up and down the Riverwalk by ourselves while he was away — stopping to shop, and eat, and bask in the beautiful scenery. However, I didn’t recall all of the steps (and levels) of the Riverwalk. Let’s just say it’s a tad bit challenging to maneuver a double stroller up and down 20+ steps by yourself when you’re six months pregnant.

The Alamo, San Antonio, Babymoon, Riverwalk, Texas history

Next time (when either the kiddos are older or we leave them home with the unsuspecting grandparents for a little uninterrupted couple-time), we will have to check out SeaWorld and the world-famous San Antonio Night Life. YASSS. Because what’s a trip to the Riverwalk without a legitimate cocktail? Hey, a girl can dream.

All in all, it was a (mostly) fun babymoon, and definitely made for some hilarious memories. We’re planning our next family trip to Disney World in the Fall (after the new baby gets here). Because we are nothing if not consistently crazy!

Where to Stay in the Texas Hill Country

If you want to do the Hill Country (San Antonio, Austin, etc.) in style — as opposed to harried, tag-a-long fashion — you should definitely consult an expert! I highly recommend reaching out to Emily Lockard-Furry, owner of Traveluxe Official. I’m seriously kicking myself for not thinking of this for our babymoon trip. She’s an avid world-traveler herself — and an incredibly talented professional photographer — Emily will hook you up! Think first-class, glamour and luxury, from start to finish.

Babymoon: New Orleans

One of the perks of being a working mom turned stay-at-home mom is that I can travel again with my husband when he has work trips! I used to accompany him a lot before we had Fischer, but over the past two years, I haven’t been able to as much because I needed to reserve personal days for those times when little man would get sick. Now that I’m pregnant with baby number two, I decided it was time to treat myself (and hubby) to a little babymoon on his next work trip.

My husband’s company hosts bi-annual company meetings that consist of both professional and company-culture development. Lucky for me, spouses are included in these trips! This time, we were treated to a three-day extravaganza in one of my favorite cities, New Orleans! At first I was nervous about this trip because, as a pregnant lady, I couldn’t enjoy my favorite adult beverages on Bourbon Street. Plus, I knew I’d be too tired to shake it late into the night on Frenchmen Street. But I soon changed my attitude and decided to live it up: babymoon style (sober, of course).

Babymoon: New Orleans Style

I’ve done New Orleans more than a few times, in college and then for girls weekends and bachelorette parties. Whatever the occasion, we typically did the same things: Cafe Du Monde, basking by a pool, enjoying the nightlife. Somehow, it never really occurred to us that there was a whole city OUTSIDE of those few bar-lined blocks of debauchery and fun. On this babymoon visit, I was forced to experience the city sober. So, I decided it was time to really dive into the culture and history of one of my favorite cities.

I started by exploring the Convention of Visitors Bureau website online and quickly learned that there was more than enough to fill my time. Cemetery tours, historical museums, famous restaurants, landmarks, neighborhoods, plantations and more! There was so much to do, I couldn’t possibly get to it all. I had to choose wisely.

French Quarter Friday!

For the first day of our babymoon, I started my morning off with a little light reading, tourist planning and a quick workout. Then I indulged in a large breakfast and hit the streets around 10am. These were some of my favorite places that I visited in the French Quarter (which is where we stayed) along with other fun attractions you should check out while you’re there!

The French Quarter

Jean Lafitte Visitors Center

Located on Decatur streets amongst the retail and sugary goods shops, this little place is easy to miss. However, if you get the chance you should pop in for a quick history of New Orleans, including the story of Jean Lafitte and a brief overview of commercial and agricultural activity. You can also get maps and other informational brochures of the area.

Jackson Square

While it doesn’t house a museum, Jackson Square is a beautiful spot to rest your tired toes, have a snack/refreshment, take some pictures, and do some epic people-watching! Named for a champion of New Orleans, Andrew Jackson, the square draws thousands of visitors a year. It also boasts beautiful views of local architecture and landscaping. New Orleans takes its gardens seriously, y’all!

Madame John’s Legacy

If you’re interested in architecture then this spot is a must. An excellent example of (and longest surviving) 18th-century residential architecture and inside you’ll find a history of New Orleans crafts and pottery. Plus, the air conditioning is on full blast.

Ursuline Convent

As I stepped beyond the gates, I immediately felt like I was in 18th-century France. This convent was the first of its kind and commissioned by Louis XV for the French Ursuline nuns. Inside you’ll find the remarkable history of their Atlantic passage, the environment and inhabitants they encountered upon arrival as well as the Catholic history of Louisiana. Outside you can frolic in the beautifully manicured French gardens.

ursuline convent

Beauregard-Keyes House

Located across the street from the Ursuline convent, you’ll find another excellent piece of period architecture and history. The house was once owned by General Beauregard, who ordered the first shots of the Civil War on Fort Sumter. Inside you’ll find many Beauregard pieces as well as those from the last owner and famed author, Frances Parkinson Keyes. While the history of the house is fascinating, perhaps the best part is the story-telling abilities of the tour guide. Afterward, relax and spend some time outside in the manicured gardens.

Louisiana State History Museum

This “museum” is actually quite deceiving because when you visit the website, it’s actually made up of multiple buildings! We chose to visit the Cabildo, which is located directly in Jackson Square on Chartres Street. Besides housing the story of New Orleans and many amazing artifacts, the building itself is of great NATIONAL historic importance. It was the location of both the Louisiana Purchase and the Plessy vs. Ferguson decision.

Half the building is dedicated to the entire history of Louisiana (three stories!) and the other half is dedicated to Hurricane Katrina and the 10 years since. If you consider yourself any sort of history buff then you MUST visit this wonderful museum, if even to just soak up the energy of such important moments in our nation’s story.

Cafe De Monde

Probably the second-most famous spot in New Orleans after Bourbon Street, this cafe is world-renowned for their utterly delicious beignets. Doesn’t matter what time you show up, there will be a line…and it’s well worth it. Especially if you’re pregnant!

Take a Tour

Another really fun way to see and get acquainted with the city is to take one of the awesome tours offered in and around New Orleans. We weren’t able to do one because we just simply ran out of time, but I’ve rounded up some good ones for y’all to check out!

1. Two Chicks Walking Tours

These tours would be a great addition to a babymoon trip! I wish I had had the time to do one of these tours because a friend of mine said the one she went on of the French Quarter was just so fantastic. Her guide was a great storyteller and loved bringing the city to life. This company is small, very personal, and offers a variety of great tours from a “Dead Sexy” tour of a cemetery to sigh-seeing the “Garden District Grandeur”.

2. Plantation Tours

I was bummed that we didn’t have time to do this either. I’ve been to plantations all over the East coast for both work and play and I wanted to compare the Louisiana experience to that of the rest of the south. Oh well, next time!

  • Oak Alley: One of the most stately and well-preserved plantations in the country, also used as a location for filming movies such as Interview With a Vampire.
  • Houma House: Take a day tour, eat and drink, or even stay the night. Houma House offers an unparalleled look into life in Antebellum Louisiana
  • Destrehan Plantation: This plantation is only a 30-minute drive from New Orleans so it’s a bit easier to do if you have dinner plans back in the city. It’s similar to Oak Alley but reviews say it’s more informative.
  • Laura Plantation: This is touted as the most unique of the New Orleans plantations if only because it was a Creole plantation. Therefore the architecture and history will differ significantly from the others in the area. If you’re looking for a more realistic view of plantation life, including treatment and life of slaves, then this is the plantation I’d most highly recommend.

3. Swamp Tours

Looking for some wildlife and environmental history of the bayou? Check out these two companies for swamp tours where you’re sure to seem some ‘gators!

Eat All the Food!

Now for one of my favorite parts of New Orleans…..FOOD!!! This was a big reason why I looked forward to coming to the city on a babymoon. The dishes here are so amazing and I love Creole cooking. I chose to indulge at a restaurant called La Petite Grocery and O.M.G. am I glad I did. The food was incredible (we had two desserts that were out of this world) and the service was impeccable. The ambiance was really pleasant and evoked the important history of the building and the decor was adorable.

The location along Magazine Street was also great because it took us in the Garden District. So we got to explore some of grandest streets in New Orleans as well as window shop boutiques and galleries. I highly, highly recommend this restaurant! (The owner and chef, Justin Devillier, is a James Beard Award multi-nominee as well as 2014’s “Chef of the Year” in New Orleans.)

Check Out the Nightlife

Finally, no trip to New Orleans is complete without a little nightlife action (even if it’s a babymoon!). A lot of people assume Bourbon Street and Harrah’s are the only places to hit, but that’s simply not true. While there are tons of bars and dives around the city, my favorite place to spend the after-dinner hours is on Frenchmen Street. There, you can wander from bar to bar listening to fantastic local musicians jamming out.

On this particular trip, we found ourselves in Bamboula’s listening to an amazing group called the Caesar Brothers. They had everyone up and dancing, they were SO fun! Here are some other great bars to check out along Frenchmen Street:

Hope y’all enjoyed my re-cap of our babymoon trip to New Orleans! I shouldn’t have been surprised that New Orleans had so much to offer any sort of visitor and I’m looking forward to our next trip back (sooner rather than later!) so I can cross even more of NOLA off my list!

Pregnant woman and partner holding hands walking on the beach.

Now that you’re expecting, you probably realize that these next few months are your last chance to get some real alone time with your partner. There are many great reasons to take a babymoon. Of course, you can enjoy this time at home with your honey, but you should consider planning a babymoon if you’re like me and want to get out of town instead.

Tips for Planning the Perfect Babymoon

Here are a few tips for planning your babymoon to keep you safe and happy on your last child-free getaway:

Tip #1: Agree on Location

You want to make sure that you pick a place that appeals to you both so you can relax and enjoy your time together: city, beach, mountains, whatever. You want to be on the same page. I will say, try to avoid any place too exotic. Having to deal with vaccines or potential stomach bugs is not something anyone should worry about during their pregnancy, and doctors do not recommend it unless it’s completely unavoidable.

Tip #2: Timing Is Everything

When planning your trip, consider how your body has changed during pregnancy and will continue to change. The second trimester should be the most comfortable time to travel. By then, the nausea of the first trimester is hopefully gone, and you won’t be as uncomfortable as you will be in your third trimester. Just know that you’ll probably tire more quickly on your trip than now, so prepare for stops and starts and make them part of your plan. (According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the safest time to travel is from 18 to 24 weeks.)

Don’t wait too long. If you do your babymoon in your third trimester, double-check with your doctor what they recommend. You’ll want to schedule it before 35 weeks since most airlines won’t let you travel after that. (Some cruises won’t let you get on the ship after 25 or 27 weeks.) If your babymoon needs to be later in your pregnancy, I recommend going somewhere a little closer to home so you won’t have to bother with flying on an airplane while pregnant. If you do decide to go elsewhere, be sure to check with the cruise or airline to see what their guidelines are for due dates.

Tip #3: Keep Your OB/Midwife in the Loop

Traveling presents a whole new set of hurdles when you become pregnant. The most important thing is safety, so make sure you speak with your OB-GYN/midwife before booking your trip. (Especially if you are carrying multiples or are considered “high risk.” Don’t be too disappointed if your doctor/midwife wants to keep you close to home.) If you plan to travel overseas, check in with your healthcare professional about any necessary vaccines. Once you settle on where you’re jet-setting, ask them if there’s anything you should watch out for.

Tip #4: Look Up the Medical Facilities

When researching locations, find out if they have access to quality medical facilities near the area (just in case). Write down the contact info for nearby hospitals to keep on hand as you travel and a number for contacting your OB.

Tip #5: Think About the Food

Not a problem, right?! Haha! You probably already think about it often during pregnancy but make sure you plan well for eating on your babymoon vacation. Remember that certain foods are no-nos now, so it’s a good idea to find out what these are in the local language and area before you go and steer clear of them. For example, say you’re going to Maui or St. John, where all the food is fish, fish, fish. Know which types of fish to stay away from during pregnancy (obviously, fish with mercury).

Tip #6: Don’t Feel Like You Have to Do It All

If sleeping in and taking it easy sounds more appealing, do it! I actually recommend it. Pregnancy makes you tired, so prioritize rest as much as possible during pregnancy. You won’t have the opportunity to sleep in for a very long time after you have this baby, so enjoy it while you can. That means you need to pick a chill place for your babymoon destination. If you choose a place where there’s always a temptation to go sightseeing or do something fun (like New York City or Las Vegas), you’ll just end up feeling even more exhausted than before you left for your babymoon. So, pick a quiet B&B or beachy locale. These are good picks because they’re all about relaxing.

Tip #7: Off-Limit Activities

There are certain activities you can’t do while you are pregnant. Yes, they may look fun during your babymoon, but it is not recommended. Here are some off-limits activities:

  • Horseback riding
  • Carnival rides
  • Outdoor biking
  • Contact sports
  • Skiing/snowboarding
  • Water skiing
  • Saunas
  • Hot tubs
  • Scuba diving
  • High altitude exercise

I know it can be a bummer, but remember, that gives you a reason to return and do those things.

Tip #8: Plan for Romance

A babymoon should be about you and your honey. After all, the whole point of a babymoon is to have some quality alone time together before life becomes about baby. Go dancing together, check out a 5-star restaurant, walk on the beach or a stroll throughout the town, or get a couples massage. You can find plenty of ways to up the romance factor during this special getaway. Remember that it’s about the two of you celebrating this last time together as a family of two. So make it memorable. 🙂

10 Things to Do on Your Babymoon in Maui

If you’re expecting a baby, you might be considering going on a babymoon before your little one arrives. And what better place to take a babymoon than Maui? But first, if you don’t know what a babymoon is, a babymoon is the last trip/getaway to enjoy your partner and your relationship before you become a family of three (or more). I am a big fan of babymoons and highly recommend all couples go somewhere to celebrate this time together. Never again will it just be the two of you, so creating a special memory before your little bundle of joy comes is such a wonderful way to enter into this exciting new time. Whether it’s a staycation or a vacation, plan something where you both can relax and enjoy one another.

What to Do on Your Maui Babymoon

The first time I was in Maui, I was 8 years old, then I was there for a second time a little over three years ago, and now I just got back from Maui for the third time from our honeymoon. Maui is truly magical. While there, I thought just how wonderful Maui would be to visit for a babymoon. Now that I have been there a few times and spoken with other visitors and locals, I wanted to share with you my list of things you should do if you decide to go to Maui for your babymoon.

1. Haleakala

I haven’t had the opportunity to go to Mt. Haleakala, which I’m completely bummed about. From all of the pictures I’ve seen and the people I’ve talked to about it, it truly sounds breathtaking and something you cannot miss.

10 Things to Do on Your Babymoon in Maui

Mt. Haleakala stands 10,023 feet above the island of Maui and is one of the most popular attractions in Hawaii. The most popular activities to be experienced at Haleakala include enjoying sunrise and sunset (I hear watching the sunrise at the summit is the absolute best), ranger-guided tours, hiking, drive-up camping, and backcountry camping on Maui.

On a babymoon, I recommend doing the drive up to watch the sunrise. I will warn you, though, that the temperature drops dramatically when you reach the summit, so you want to wear pants, closed-toe shoes, a sweater and/or a jacket to stay warm. (It can get below 40 degrees up there.) Yes, you’ll have to wake up early. Really early. But watching the sunrise over a sea of clouds is, from what I’ve heard and can tell, unforgettable. I can’t think of a better way to start a day.

2. Road to Hana

There are many ways to experience the Road to Hana and the town of Hana. Visitors can go on group and private tours or venture on their own by renting a vehicle. My husband and I had our own rented car, so a few days after our wedding, we drove down the road to Hana with his best man. Wow, is it windy! There are 620 curves and 59 bridges throughout the drive, which makes it one of the most scenic drives in the world. And one of the most nauseating, which I can speak from experience. I do not recommend this option if you suffer from major motion sickness or are experiencing morning/all-day sickness. But if you don’t have these issues and are up for a beautiful drive and a fun trip, I say go for it! You won’t regret it!

10 Things to Do on Your Babymoon in Maui

When traveling to Hana, research areas and attractions ahead of time so you can spend a good amount of time at each location. We downloaded the app ‘Gypsy Guide‘, which was our pocket tour guide. I thought it was great because it provided us with information throughout the drive and gave us recommendations at stopping points. Instead of stopping at every bridge and lookout point for a photo op, I suggest you seek out two to three main destinations to maximize your adventure to Hana. A few of the most popular areas on the Road to Hana are Twin Falls (which we loved), the Garden of Eden, the Bamboo Forest, Waianapanapa State Park and Black Sand Beach, Hana Bay, and the Seven Sacred Pools.

3. LAHAINA’S BANYAN TREE

Lahaina’s Banyan Tree is over 137 years old, and spreads across an almost complete 1-acre of downtown Lahaina. This species is the largest of its kind in the United States.

In 1873, Sheriff William Owen Smith planted this Banyan Tree to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Protestant missionaries in Lahaina. The once single trunk has now expanded into over 16 trunks due to this species’ aerial roots. The Banyan Tree in Lahaina is a historical landmark and a jaw-dropping sight. It’s definitely a spot you and your honey should visit.

DSC_0121

Within a short walk from the Banyan Tree in Lahaina, you can find lots of shopping, dining, and activities along Front Street. The food and shops are great, or if you prefer something different, you can take a paddleboarding lesson, lay on the beach, and/or enjoy one (or two) of their amazing shave ice. (Yes, they call it “shave ice”) This was definitely one of my husband’s favorite things. During your next visit to the historic town of Lahaina, make sure to check out the Banyan Tree to learn more about Maui’s roots!

4. Old Lahaina Luau

The Old Lahaina Luau is hands down one of the most popular things for first-time Maui visitors to do. I went to this luau the last time I was there, three years ago, and it was a great way to spend an evening learning more about the Hawaiian culture and trying their cuisine. Though entry rates may seem steep, seeing the award-winning dancing and music is worth the cost. While you admire the performers’ hula and fire dancing skills, you’ll dine on Hawaiian specialties such as kalua pua’a (pork roasted in an underground oven), fresh mahi-mahi, and poi (mashed taro plant).

5. Molokini Snorkeling

There are plenty of great spots to snorkel around Maui, but I recommend Molokini.

DSC_0015 copy

DSC_0020 copy

Molokini is a world-famous snorkeling and diving destination. It’s one of only three sheltered volcanic calderas in the world, and it is blessed with crystal-clear water and a wealth of sea life. Visibility at Molokini Crater is often in excess of 100 feet, which is amazing in the Hawaiian Islands, where strong ocean currents and abundant beaches often limit the visibility at other locations. On your way out to the crater, you and your partner may see dolphins, whales, and several sea turtles!

6. Explore by Helicopter

Many of the most beautiful spots on the island are inaccessible, and the only way to see them is by helicopter. This is something that I highly recommend that you two do. It truly is gorgeous to see the whole island from the sky. You get to see so many waterfalls, cruise along the rugged volcanic coastline, and enjoy the beauty of Haleakala above the clouds. Absolutely breathtaking. You can even hop across the channels to see the sea-cliff waterfalls of Molokai or the coast of Big Island.

7. Relax on the Beach

Relaxing and laying on the beach should definitely be on your Maui babymoon agenda. My two favorite beaches that I’ve been to that I suggest you check out are Ka’anapali Beach and Wailea Beach.

Kaʻanapali Beach is 1.5 miles long and a great place full of activity due to its location among Kaʻanapali Resort and the many other hotels that sit along the shore. Located in West Maui, Kaʻanapali Beach is a great place for snorkeling or paddle boarding.

DSC_0049 copy

Wailea’s beach is a fun area to visit, too. It is near lots of restaurants and shops (the Shops at Wailea are really nice, and you should definitely try Monkey Pod for a meal) with restrooms and equipment rentals. Though it can be crowded with tourists, Wailea Beach is really beautiful. It’s probably my favorite beach. Often, you’ll find a local company offering stand-up paddle boards or chairs for rent.

8. Pamper Yourself

This is your babymoon, so you should pamper yourself! Make time during your trip to schedule a prenatal massage and/or mani/pedi. If you have the budget, you can even schedule a massage with an ocean view. Wherever you decide to get a massage, ensure your massage therapist is trained in prenatal massage and has experience working with pregnant women. I got a massage, mani and pedi at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, and they were absolutely fabulous! I highly recommend them.

9. Enjoy the Resorts

You can stay in a beachside 5-star resort, an Airbnb, a condo, or rent a Vrbo for a few nights and try to live like the locals. If you really want to splurge, it’s hard to go wrong with the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. (The big resorts are the Four Seasons, the Ritz Carlton, Grand Wailea, The Fairmont, Andaz, etc.) This is where we stayed and got married; it truly was heaven on earth.

10. Photo Session

Cherish these moments forever, and make sure to take lots of pictures. If you can, hire a photographer to take your photos together. Having some nice, professional photos of your last trip as just the two of you will truly capture the love and how special this time is. If that’s not in your budget, bring a good camera and document as much as possible. Strangers are always willing to help take a picture. 🙂

Below is a moment my maid of honor caught while we were on the beach at sunset after our wedding ceremony. And this was on her iPhone! Imagine the pictures you can capture on your Maui babymoon!
